The pumping of fluids that contain solid materials is a common requirement in a variety of industries, such as agriculture, food processing and wastewater treatment. However, these solids can be anything from stones and pieces of metal that can cause wear for the pump to softer solids that can clog the equipment. The treatment of these solids will also vary and so will influence the type of pump chosen.
The presence of hard solids, particularly if numerous and large, presents the biggest challenge although this can be reduced if the solids are in thick fluids that cushion their damaging effect. Certain pumps that have very tight tolerances between moving parts and the casing are unsuitable to handle hard and abrasive solids since these can frequently become jammed. Other pumps are more flexible and allow solids to pass through easily with no damage.
Some pumps have relatively few moving parts that are in contact with the fluid and so are less likely to be damaged by solids. In these cases, the main limitation is the diameter of the pipes since these need to allow the largest solids to pass through without obstruction. That can often be overcome by specifying a larger pump than is necessary for the required throughput, running it at below maximum speed so that wear and maintenance costs are reduced.
The other main consideration is the treatment of solids within the pump. In food processing, for example, they may comprise pieces of fruit that need to be kept intact and so the main requirement is that the pump can pass them through undamaged. In other cases, the solids may be crushed, ground or chopped up so they’re smaller and easier to deal with. If the solids are relatively minor and not required, the fitting of a filter will prevent them from entering the pump.
Selecting the most appropriate solids handling pump can be a complex process. It’s not just a question of determining the size and characteristics of the solids but also how they are to be treated. There are also the considerations of suction capabilities, flow rates, pressure, installation needs and the costs, both for acquisition and operation.
